The Evangelical Church Tuzla

History

Tuzla Picture from Fall 2004Tuzla is in the North-East of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the third largest city. Tuzla Canton is the most populated in the whole of BiH with around 500 000 inhabitants.

The history of the church starts during the war, in 1994, when Nikola Skrinjarić and Karmelo Kresonja were visiting Tuzla, transporting and providing aid through the humanitarian organisation ‘Agape’. Klaus Domke, a German missionary, stayed in Tuzla and, apart from distributing humanitarian aid, was sharing the hope and love of the Lord with people.

The Evangelical Church of Tuzla (ECT) was founded in 1995, when the first baptisms were performed by Nikola Skrinjarić, and the church was officially registered the same year. At that time Klaus left for Bihać and Nenad and Zorica Jambrović, a couple from Zagreb, Croatia came to stay and pastor the church full-time.

After two years of moving and renting, the church’s current building was found and bought. Nenad and Zorica moved back to Zagreb in 2001 and Zoran Pavić and Nives Targuš took over leadership of the church. Zoran was born in Tuzla and Nives came to Tuzla in 1998 from Osijek, Croatia to help in full time ministry. In 2002, Nives and Zoran got married, and in 2003 Zoran was ordained by the leadership of the Evangelical Church of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Vision

As a church, our goal is to grow more in spiritual maturity, cover the town with home groups, and also eventually send new leaders into neighboring towns and villages.

The hope of our church is to be strong enough in its core that we can impact our community in different ways according to the needs, all for God’s glory.

Leadership

Zoran Pavić is the pastor. He and four other church members form a church oversight team, who discuss and make decisions regarding church issues.

Ministries

There are 38 members, and about 35 to 45 people come to the Sunday service. Apart from Sunday services, there is a prayer meeting on Tuesday evening and four home Bible study groups, which meet on Thursday or Friday. There is a women’s meeting once every three months. Other ministries include a Sunday school program for children, Saturday evening meetings for young people and sometimes half-nights of prayer on Friday night.

Svjetionik English School, founded in 1998, is owned by the church and is in the same building. It is approved by the local government as an educational institution and is run by the Director Gordana Jurković (Bosnian) and Gill Matthews (British), who both qualified as ESL teachers in Britain. Other teachers (mainly British) come to teach for shorter periods of time (a year or two) as well, and all school staff are actively involved in church life. The school is always keen to recruit new teachers.

The school has a good reputation locally and is always full, with about 100-120 students, and many more on the waiting list. It has 5 levels, after which it offers preparation for Cambridge Certificate exams in English, which can be taken in Zagreb or Sarajevo. The goal of the school is to provide a high standard of English teaching, shine God’s light and share Jesus with the students.

The Roma village, Kiseljak, is near Tuzla. There are about 200 families with many children. Most of them live in very poor conditions but about 90% of the children are going to school. The village has a small committee that is fighting for their interests. A special program called CHE (Community Health Education), and humanitarian aid distribution are run by the church at the moment in Kiseljak. There is also a group of men and women that open the doors of their homes to visits, friendships and Bible study.

We are happy to have had a close and friendly relationship with “LotosOrganization for Disabled People in Tuzla for a long time. From time to time, the church helps with humanitarian aid (clothing, food, wheelchairs, etc…) in support to the organization.

Prayer needs

  • guidance from the Lord for the leadership and church, where and how to serve the community which is so overwhelming in needs
  • more teachers to join the English School
  • new leaders to work with young people
  • help from God as we continue to serve among the local Roma population
